I was dialing around the radio this weekend and heard this haunting voice on 93.9 The River and thought it was worth sharing.
A review reads, "Having not released this, his debut solo album, until the relatively advanced age of 30, Scott Matthews has had plenty of time to absorb a whole raft of influences, and he’s acquired some interesting ones. Essentially a blues-based singer-songwriter with a penchant for the late Sixties, together with the more-or-less-expected bits of folk and rock. Matthews’ vocals, indebted to Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake, are also a little too mannered on occasion. But he’s produced something a little left field, a little different, and it makes for an interesting listen." -Jeremy Searle

sweet treats that’ll make you smile
Steve and I stopped by the Ferndale Art Fair this past Sunday and stumbled upon this super-cute bakery. The window displays, color palette and lovely decor couldn’t be more inviting.
I indulged in a carrot cake-cream cheese frosted cupcake and Steve had large chocolate chip cookie. They were both very tasty. Another pleasant surprise was our bill… only 2.92!
So next time you have a craving for a little sweet treat, I highly recommend a stop at the pinwheel bakery.

delicious apple danish
I don’t eat many donuts, but when offered a danish with cream cheese… I buckle. So when I found this fall treat I couldn’t resist baking one up for the weekend.
Danish Apple Braid
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup pecans, chopped
2 packages (8 oz each) refrigerated crescent rolls
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled cored and sliced
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon maple-flavored syrup
Preheat oven to 375F.
Combine cream cheese and powdered sugar.
Add egg.
Chop pecans.
Unroll 1 pkg. of crescent dough; do not separate. Place lengthwise on greased cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining package of dough.
Roll dough to seal perforations. On the longest sides, cut dough into strips 1 1/2" wide and 3" deep (there will be 6" in center for filling.)
Spread half of cream cheese mixture evenly over middle of dough.
Peel, core, slice apples. Cut slices crosswise in half; evenly arrange apple slices over cream cheese mixture. Combine sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over apples. Scoop remaining cream cheese mixture over apples. Sprinkle with pecans. To braid, lift strips of dough across mixture to meet in center, twisting each strip one turn. Continue, alternating strips to form braid. Tuck ends up to seal at end of braid. Bake 25-28 minutes until deep golden brown.
Remove from oven and brush with syrup.
Now that’s the way to enjoy some autumn apples.

oh boy… ben taylor
Recognize this handsome guy? I was first introduced to his soothing melodic tunes by our Berkley manager, Danielle. (He’s her John Mayer – if you will)
Nothing I Can Do from Another Run Around the Sun album.
A music review reads, "In the department of Talented Progeny of (Two) Famous Musicians, Ben Taylor has few if any peers. The child of James Taylor, veritably the father of the entire singer/songwriter genre, and Carly Simon, who once wrote a song so incendiary that one very silly man paid $50,000 to find out who it was written about (still nobody really knows for sure).
Another Run Around the Sun is the younger Taylor ‘s first proper solo record. The new material finds Taylor parsing in his father’s stock-and-trade, nursing understated folk-rock melodies with a side of fine finger-picking and a topping of warm, inviting tenor. His voice may not yet have the same time-worn, earthy heft that his father’s has accumulated over the years, nor has Ben quite gotten the hang of his deft touch with the pen, but these can both be chalked up to the symptoms of a second-generation malaise that affects its victims until they can truly get a grasp on their direction. Being, though, that all we inevitably scoffed at our parents’ taste in music until we grew up and found out how cool a lot of it actually was (I wouldn’t be the James Taylor devotee that I am without my own mother’s guidance), the fact that Ben has so readily embraced his own father’s style can only point towards positive progress; even if some might take such unimaginativeness as a strike against him.
It’s a mellow, unassuming record, not one to take itself too seriously (listen for the little cutesy guitar run in "Love" to see if it doesn’t sound familiar), but shows without a doubt that time is still the finest teacher on Earth. Regardless of whom your parents are." -Luke Daniel Rush
hip art for playful hearts
Meet Claudine Hellmuth of Orlando Florida… collage artist extraordinaire. She creates mixed media collages that incorporate paper, paint, fabric, pen and photocopies. She describes her work as whimsical and colorful with a dash of retro.
Claudine is a very busy girl… writing books, putting together instructional dvds, teaching workshops, creating artwork for companies PLUS she still has time to create personalized artwork (as seen above). You just send her your photographs and she creates a magical portrait of your family.
I think this composition is so funny… just add a couple of cats and it’d be the perfect layout for my furry family portrait. (just in case you were wondering – Steve, my husband isn’t furry… just the pets:)
Just recently Claudine was featured on Martha Stewart’s TV Show. She demonstrated how to make these oh-so-adorable sitting pretty poppets. She wrote all about her experience on her blog (very interesting and entertaining)
I personally really love Claudine’s work, so when I found out she was teaching a 3 day workshop this spring in Alpena, Michigan, I had to sign up. It’s been a while since I made art just for myself. I find it’s really easy to get wrapped up in the business side of it all and it’s time to remind myself where it all started. I can’t wait to introduce Samson to the world of pretty poppets.

Good Service Means I’ll be Back (excerpt)
I’ve been telling friends — and anyone else who will listen — about what a great time I had shopping for a battery charger at Best Buy in Madison Heights.
I was greeted by several employees, got help from a knowledgeable clerk, made it through checkout easily and was on my way back to work before I knew it.
Which is so fabulous. And kind of sad.
At many stores, I am ignored.
No smile. No hello. No "How may I help you?"
And from me, no sale.
It’s common sense, but now a survey quantifies it: A bad experience with a salesclerk is the biggest reason a shopper stops shopping at a store.
According to the study, being unable to find a store clerk causes retailers to lose about 6% of their business.
Being ignored by salesclerks drives away 3% of shoppers.
The bottom line is that shopping isn’t so much about buying a shirt or washing machine or a can of paint, it’s about the experience.
Where to go? Here are seven stores where I’ve experienced consistently good service
Catching Fireflies: It’s not surprising that this quirky store won a 2007 gold medal from Gifts & Decorative Accessories Magazine — Fireflies is super accessible and inclusive. Its two stores are full of art tiles, jewelry, wonderful cards and photo albums, wacky housewares and pet products. And it has special deals for birthday girls and guys.
better than a bear hug
One of our catching fireflies fans, Diane Wurdock, heard about our Humane Society Fundraiser and thought we’d appreciate this funny forwarded email. I laughed out loud and couldn’t resist sharing it with all of you.
Doggy Manual on How to Hug a Baby
1. First, spy a baby.
2. Second, be sure that the object you spied was indeed a baby by employing classic sniffing techniques. If you smell baby powder and the wonderful aroma of wet diapers this is indeed
a baby.
3. Next you will need to flatten the baby before actually beginning the hugging process.
4. The "paw slide" Simply slide paws around baby and prepare for possible close-up. **Note: The added slobber should help in future steps by making the "paw slide" easier.
5. Finally, if a camera is present, you will need to execute the difficult and patented "hug, smile, and lean" so as to achieve the best photo quality.
Dogs, if this is properly done, it will secure you a warm, dry,climate-controlled environment for the rest of your life.
the wonderful world of rebe
One of my ‘must-stop-shops’ in Traverse City is Euphoria an earthly beauty boutique. The warm colors and sweet displays create a wonderful shopping environment.
This is where I was introduced to the wonderful world of Rebe handbags.
Rebe came to be when Debra Weiss and Hillery Sproatt (a mother-daughter team) decided to follow their dreams. Debra has a degree in textile design from U.C. at Davis and Hillery brings her art ability and design sense to their whimsical product line.
I’ve yet to indulge in one of these delicious patterned bags because like most things I love… they’re a little expensive, but a girl can still drool for free.
Did I mention they design clothes too? Ahhhhhh…

magical places for you and your muse
Meet Bob Thomas, folk artist extraorndinaire, of Monumental Finds in Frankfort, Michigan.
Steve and I were headed back home from our recent ‘up-north adventure’ when we drove by these amazing creations. By the expression on my face, he knew there was a U-turn that needed to happen. (almost 9 years of marriage will do that to ya)
Bob’s shop is full of miscellaneous antiques and embellishments he finds in the Shenandoah Valley.
And in his spare time, he creates these magical places from a variety of recycled goods.
If my backyard was big enough, I would have a hard time not bringing one of these whimsical wonders home… or one would also look fabulous behind my fantasyland cottage on the beach. (maybe someday)
I love the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ feel of this one.
In my opinion, you’re never too old to have a magical tea party with real or imaginary friends.
Finding eclectic artists like Bob always inspire me to continue thinking outside the box… life is just more fun that way.
