ann arbor art fair – like no other

ann arbor art fair – like no other
Steve and I have been going to the Ann Arbor Art Fair every year since 1995.  Back then I sat on a curb and did hair wraps for $1 an inch to make some extra cash during college, but now we get to enjoy and indulge in the many beautiful art pieces showcased during this wonderful event. In addition to the artist tents, there are many talented street performers scattered about… along with great .

robina rhapsody rocks berkley
Steve, Samson and I enjoyed a wonderful summer evening filled with music and festivities at the Robina Rhapsody last Thursday.  This great downtown event is just a block from our Berkley store  and is put on by the talented Berkley Beautification Committee.    catching fireflies is delighted to be a sponsor for this concert series that takes place the third Thursday of every month during the summer. In addition to live music, kids can .

The catching fireflies crew got all decked out for Hour Magazine’s Best of Detroit Party at the Max M. Fisher Music Center this past Thursday. This is the all-star team that makes the catching fireflies magic happen… starting from the left with Danielle – the charming Berkley manager, me, Steve (my hubby) – the business man behind the curtain, Dena – the comedic Rochester manager and our latest addition, Sara – the webmaster and .

downtown berkley… then and now

downtown berkley… then and now
The city of Berkley, MI turns 75 this year and this prompted a local gentlemen to do some research on our great little town. He came across this photo from the 1920’s (before Berkley was even named a city) and was kind enough to share it with us. …look familiar? (yeah, that’s us in the turquoise and purple) I’m so glad our store is located in such an old building.  It makes the perfect .

leon & lulu – hip homewares
If you live in Metro Detroit and are looking to retire some of your current furniture, I highly recommend a visit to Leon & LuLu in Clawson. They have a fabulous collection of hip furnishings at reasonable prices AND they’re independently owned (always a plus in my book) Steve & I just recently replaced our tired-old couch with this cute tobacco-colored leather set. We love it!

isaiah zagar – master of mosaics
I first bumped into Isaiah’s wild art work while venturing out to dinner on South Street in Philadelphia a few years ago.  And every time I revisit the city, I always must tour his magnificent mosaics.  There are over 30 buildings he worked his wonder on and they’re all mapped out in this great book Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens.  Here are some of the photos I took on my latest excursion… This is his studio, .

my favorite philly pit stop

my favorite philly pit stop
I only visit Philly once a year for the Buyers Market of American Craft trade show (this is where gallery owners come from all over to order artwork from more than 1200 talented artists – me being one of them)  and one of my favorite stops is the Reading Terminal Market (located right across from the convention center).  Steve and I faithfully eat breakfast and lunch there everyday during our stay. There are loads .

My third and most enjoyable stop of my a.i. paper trade show tour is New York.  We schedule in a couple extra days so we can play in the city a bit.  First comes work though… here is my husband Steve setting up our booth. In a matter of 3-4 hours our booth showcasing all of our latest designs is set to go. We spend the next five days writing orders for stores and .

anthropologie windows

anthropologie windows
I always enjoy perusing Anthropologie’s store windows in Birmingham, Michigan… but when I saw the displays at the Rockefeller Plaza Anthropologie location this past January, my jaw dropped.  They truly are works of art. Here’s a close up where you can see they took a gardening book and made it come to life by actually having greens come directly out from the pages. yes… those are individual blades of grass coming out from the .

abc home – 6 floors of WOW
When I strolled by the entrance of   ABC Carpet & Home on Broadway in NYC I knew I had to explore further and I am so glad I did.  It was full of fantastic finds and everything they offered was put together so beautifully.  Here are just a few photographs to tempt you.
