color play spray chalk
Miss Marlo has never met a spray bottle she didn’t love so I was quite certain she would have a happy time playing with these pretty primary colors.
You most likely already have a few of the ingredients you need to create a colorful sidewalk in your kitchen already. You could use food coloring to color your concoction or for a more stain friendly option choose washable tempera paints. I picked up my spray containers at the dollar store.
Here’s what I put in each spray bottle:
1/4 cup corn starch
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 cup hot water
a good squirt of paint or coloring
After all your ingredients are in the bottle, shake, shake, shake until they are all mixed together. Since the corn starch does settle over time, you do want to shake again periodically.
Now comes the fun part… spray, spray, spray away! Since I selected primary colors, I had fun showing Marlo how when you mix them together you make other colors.
She was more focused on spraying the sidewalk… and me :-) (consider yourself warned) After Marlo tired of the color fun, we put some vinegar in another spray bottle to get some bubble action. I’m sure there is a science lesson in there but we’ll tackle that in our next sidewalk session.
After the vinegar we transitioned to spraying just water and that really blended the colors together. In the end it was a fun little activity for an August evening and we still have plenty of paint to do it a few more times.
